It was my first year of being personal shoppers and stylists for brides post my journalism and celebrity styling career and there has not been a more gratifying vocation than to serve real people and turn their dream into reality. When real people are the amazing folks who live in sunny California and have deep cultural attachments to everything Indian you cannot ask for more. A sweet gem in our portfolio is Veena and Sahil’s nuptials that took place in Palm Springs, California. Sounds of santoor had filled the Mojave desert with divine melody. A larger-than-life elephant was decked up as a true Indian baraati. He strutted around like a VIP and was the most photographed celeb on the wedding (even more than the couple). Mogras, marigolds and some wholesome Indian food reminded us of home away from home. Our role was to dress the bridal party in elegant Indian attire and so we did. The bride and groom’s timeless look was a reminder of how Indian weddings may be changing in style but its heart and hospitality remains the same. Garish and over-done symbols are no longer the diktat.
